The Cultural Triangle offers three main parks for elephant safaris: Minneriya National Park, Kaudulla National Park, and Hurulu Eco Park. Because these areas are connected by an ecological corridor, the herds move between them based on water and food availability. To get the most out of your visit, it helps to understand this migration pattern and remain flexible with your safari plans.

Why do the elephants move between parks?

Elephants migrate to follow receding water levels and fresh grass.

During the dry season, large bodies of water like the Minneriya tank shrink, exposing lush grass on the banks. This draws hundreds of elephants. When the rains return, the tanks fill up, the grass is submerged, and the elephants move to surrounding forests and other parks like Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park to find food.

When is Minneriya National Park the best choice?

Minneriya is the top choice during the dry season, from July to October.

This is when the famous 'Elephant Gathering' occurs. Up to 350 wild Asian elephants congregate around the Minneriya Reservoir. If you are visiting in August or September, Minneriya is usually the most reliable location for large herds.

When should I visit Kaudulla National Park?

Kaudulla often sees peak elephant numbers slightly later in the year, typically October to December.

As the northeast monsoon begins to fill the Minneriya tank, many elephants migrate through the corridor to Kaudulla. Kaudulla also has a large reservoir and offers excellent viewing when the herds move there.

What about Hurulu Eco Park?

Hurulu Eco Park is the best backup option during the wet season (December to March).

When both Minneriya and Kaudulla are flooded and the tall grass is inaccessible, elephants retreat into the dense scrub and forests of Hurulu Eco Park. It is smaller and less scenic than the national parks, but it guarantees elephant sightings when the main parks are quiet.

Minneriya vs Kaudulla vs Eco Park: A Quick Comparison

Compare the parks by peak season, landscape, and typical elephant numbers.

Use this guide to understand what each park offers throughout the year. Remember that wildlife is unpredictable, and local trackers have the most current information.

How can I ensure I pick the right park?

Book a flexible safari package from a base town like Habarana or Sigiriya.

Do not lock yourself into a specific park ticket in advance. Instead, book a jeep and driver. Experienced local trackers communicate with each other daily. On the morning of your safari, your driver will know exactly which park has the most elephants and will take you there.

Questions travellers ask

Are entrance fees the same for all three parks?

Entrance fees vary slightly. Minneriya and Kaudulla typically charge $15-$30 USD per adult plus taxes and vehicle fees. Hurulu Eco Park is often slightly cheaper.

Can I visit two parks in one day?

While possible, it is not recommended. Safaris take 3-4 hours, and visiting two parks involves too much driving and extra entrance fees without significantly improving your sightings.

Do I need different vehicles for different parks?

No. The same private or shared 4WD open-topped safari jeeps are used for Minneriya, Kaudulla, and Hurulu Eco Park.
