The Core Park Habitats

Minneriya National Park covers roughly 89 square kilometers of diverse terrain. Safari drives focus on three main ecosystems to spot the wildlife.

You explore the park entirely by 4WD safari jeep. Drivers navigate through dense forests and scrublands before reaching the central wetlands. The park supports 24 mammal species and over 160 bird species across these distinct zones.

Understanding these habitats helps you know where to look. Elephants gather near the water, while leopards and deer prefer the forest cover.

Minneriya Tank (Reservoir)

1-2 hoursJuly to October

King Mahasen built this man-made lake in the 3rd century AD. During the dry season, the receding waters expose fresh grass. This draws up to 350 wild Asian elephants to the area. Visit between July and October to witness this massive congregation.

Dry Mixed Evergreen Forests

Seen throughout the driveWatch tree canopies

Dense woodland filled with Palu, Satinwood, and Milla trees surrounds the central tank. These forests provide essential shade and shelter for the park's wildlife. Watch the tree canopies and underbrush closely. This is where macaques, deer, and elusive leopards typically hide.
