Timing is everything when planning a safari to see The Gathering. As the dry season progresses, water sources dry up across the region, forcing elephants to congregate around the central Minneriya tank. Knowing exactly when this happens ensures you see the highest number of animals.
When is The Great Elephant Gathering?
The Gathering peaks between July and October, with August and September offering the highest concentrations of elephants.
During these months, up to 350 wild Asian elephants gather around the receding waters of the 3rd-century Minneriya Reservoir. The newly exposed lakebed provides fresh grass, making it the primary feeding ground. This event is unique to the dry season dynamics of Sri Lanka's cultural triangle.

What happens during the wet season?
From November to April, heavy rainfall fills the local water sources, causing the elephant herds to disperse.
When rain is plentiful, elephants migrate to nearby forests and parks like Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park. You can still see small groups of elephants in Minneriya, but the massive herds associated with The Gathering will not be present. Compare Cultural Triangle parks

Month-by-month sightings guide
Elephant numbers fluctuate based on the monsoon rains and the water level of the Minneriya tank.
Plan your visit according to the dry season patterns. The later you go in the dry season, the larger the herds, provided the rains have not yet returned.
What time of day is best for a safari?
The afternoon, starting around 3:00 PM, is the best time to see elephants near the water.
As the midday heat decreases, elephants emerge from the shade of the Dry Mixed Evergreen Forests to drink and bathe at the reservoir. Morning safaris are cooler and less crowded but typically yield fewer elephant sightings. Core Park Habitats

Is the park open all year?
Yes, Minneriya National Park is open year-round from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Even outside of The Gathering, the park supports over 160 bird species, leopards, sloth bears, and deer. A safari here is always active, but you must set your expectations regarding elephant herd sizes based on the month you visit.
